Dinosaurs of the Jurassic Period

The Jurassic Period lasted from about 201 to 143 million years ago. It is divided into Early, Middle and Late Jurassic. Not all Jurassic dinosaurs lived at the same time: some were separated by millions of years. The Jurassic belongs to the Mesozoic Era (252–66 million years ago), which includes three periods: the Triassic (252–201), Jurassic (201–143) and Cretaceous (143–66 million years ago).

When did dinosaurs live?
  1. Hadean4.57–4.03 billion years ago
  2. Archean4.03–2.5 billion years ago
  3. Proterozoic2.5 billion–539 million years ago
  4. Phanerozoic539 million years ago — present
    1. Paleozoic
    2. Mesozoic
    3. Cenozoic

The Jurassic was the age of giant plant-eating sauropods, but they were far from its only inhabitants. It also had two-legged predators, small dinosaurs and stegosaurs with bony plates along their backs and spikes on their tails. Allosaurus was a well-known Late Jurassic predator, while Compsognathus was much smaller than many of its contemporaries.

Not every famous dinosaur lived during the Jurassic. Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops appeared much later, in the Cretaceous Period. This deck includes Jurassic animals, among them the lesser-known Guanlong, Yinlong and Cryolophosaurus.

What the flashcards look like

This is a real flashcard about Stegosaurus. The front shows the dinosaur’s name. Try to remember what it looked like and what set it apart from other Jurassic animals. For instance, Stegosaurus is easy to recognize by the large plates along its back and the spikes on its tail. If you don’t know it yet, turn the card over and meet this unusual dinosaur.

On the back you’ll find an illustration and a short dinosaur profile: what it ate, when it lived, how large it grew and where its fossils were found. Below that is a story of its anatomy, distinctive traits and scientific discovery. This way you can learn names while gradually getting better at telling similar animals apart.

You don’t have to memorize everything at once. Start with each dinosaur’s most recognizable features, then revisit the cards and notice new details. Over time, familiar names will form a clearer picture of life in the Jurassic Period.
